Away from the Santiago Bernabeu, he helped Brazil to World Cup glory in 2002 with his pace and power.

Chendo | 1982-1998 | The defender stood for everything that Real Madrid represents. The Blancos' winning mentality flowed through his veins from his first appearance until his 497th. He even retired in style - winning La Liga for the seventh and final time in 1997-98.

Sergio Ramos | 2005-present day | Since his arrival from Sevilla, the Spaniard has evolved into a world class defender, alternating from right-back to centre-back. He has been an example of commitment to Real Madrid, where he is vice-captain behind Iker Casillas. He has been an indispensable member of Spain's side while at Madrid, making his national debut as a 19-year-old.

Fernando Hierro | 1989-2003 | The defender had a brilliant sense of anticipation and positioning. Very dependable and accurate with his passes, in his 14 years at the club he lifted three European Cups, scored 127 goals and was a constant presence in defence. The late footballing legend's arrival in Madrid was a breathe of fresh air in the 1950s and he was the man who inspired them to the first five European Cups. Zinedine Zidane | 2001-2006 | The Frenchman oozed elegance and class - a magician with the ball at his feet and a dancer who weaved between opposition players. Zidane spent the final five years of his awe-inspiring career at the Santiago Bernabeu and his defining moment was the acrobatic, iconic volley in the 2002 Champions League final.

Cristiano Ronaldo | 2008-present day | Creating new adjectives to describe the two-time Ballon d'Or winner - one of the best goalscorers to have ever graced the game - is becoming increasingly difficult. Ronaldo embodies Real Madrid now in the same way that Di Stefano did in his era. Any future Blancos superstar will have his work cut out matching the records that the Portuguese continues to smash.
